Passionate traveler Veronica Hinman recently returned from a trip to Napa’s Calistoga Ranch. Here are her impressions.
Calistoga Ranch’s canyon, situated on 157 protected acres, is incredibly private. The property has tree house-like architecture and beautiful hiking trails, a lake and vineyards. The spa atop a hill offers treatments using local soaps, lotions and oils. The plunge pools and infinity Jacuzzi overlooks the serene mountainside.
The restaurant is an epicurean triumph using fabulously fresh and organic ingredients. Not only is lunch and dinner divine but room service is also wonderful. One morning I ordered the continental breakfast and was amazed by the spread that arrived on a rattan tray: the freshest-cut fruit, warm fresh-baked mini muffins, scones and pastries, fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice and coffee. All of it was presented perfectly. Another tasty option offered is the picnic. I ordered a boxed lunch one day when I went wine tasting. The property is pet-friendly and there is even a special menu for your dog, called “Happy Trails.” The ranch provides a list of the wineries that welcome dogs.
The hotel has a clubhouse that offers yoga classes, Haiku instruction, and cooking classes hosted by the Cooking Institute of America. The property even has one of Napa’s few wedding spaces. (Apparently getting the appropriate permit is really difficult in the area). The wine cave, built into the side of a mountain, is a great spot for a private party.
This hotel is a dream for chic outdoorsy types looking for an active get-away in nature.
